The sparkling lake and velvety rolling green hills of Morgan
Creek Golf and Country Club was the perfect backdrop for a
leisurely day on the green — for a good cause, of course.

The Greater Sacramento Urban League held its 12th Annual
“Day On the Green” Golf Classic on October 5.
Out of 148 registered participants, according to event coordinator
DeNelle Ellison, only two did not show.
Golfers included Sacramento City Councilmember Rob Huang,
former Sacramento Fire Chief Julius “Joe” Cherry,
V101’s Devin Kyle, and owners from the Lucky Derby and
Phoenix Casinos, just to name a few.
“We over subscribed for the event,” Ellison
said, “and fundamentally had a 100 percent turnout.”
The tournament is an annual fundraising event for the Urban
League, a non-profit workforce development and social services
agency that essentially sustains itself.
“All proceeds from the event go toward Urban League
programs and keeping them going,” she explained.
The financial onus isn’t completely on the players
though — several sponsors contributed to the event a
success, including Methodist Hospital, Wal-Mart, Pepsi, PG&E
and more.
In addition to enjoying a day of golfing, participants were
treated to a hot breakfast before registration and to a luncheon
immediately following play.
The icing on the cake came in the form of such prizes as
a luxury, five-night six-day trip for two to the St. Andrews
Links in Scotland.
“People had a great time, they really did. They almost
had too much fun,” Ms. Ellison joked. “They didn’t
want to go home.”
