Blacks In State Government

Appointees By Gov. Gray Davis

When Governor Gray Davis took office in 1998 he did so with a large percentage of African American voters voting for him.

The one thing that makes Black voters feel like they have supported the right person for an office like Governor, is to see the candidate-turned-elected official select and/or appoint qualified African Americans to, not only high positions in the governor's administration, but also to the very prestigious boards, commissions, judgeships and other appointed seats.

Governor Davis has followed through relatively well on his commitment to appoint Blacks.

Of the approximately 2,510 appointments the Governor has made to date, 7 percent are African American.

The more than 180 African Americans in Davis' administration include a cabinet secretary, undersecretaries, judges, department directors, deputy directors, and the adjutant general of the State Military Forces.

Davis has also appointed a wide range of African Americans to many different boards and commissions, e.g. State Board of Education, High-Speed Rail Authority, University of California Regents, Coastal Commission, Student Aid Commission and the Anti-Terrorism information Center Executive Advisory Group.

Shown here is a list of Governor Davis' African American appointments:
