Sacramento's Black Elected Officials
The pictorial "Gallery of Sacramento's Current
Black Elected Officials" on display at Black Expo '04 was
a key attraction during the three-day event. Guests could be seen
taking photos of their families and friends next to the gallery.
The exhibit includes African Americans who presently
occupy political seats in local government, as well as those who
serve on local school boards and on the board for the area's municipal
utility district.

Bonnie was elected to the Sacramento City Council in 1998.
She currently serves on the Board of Directors of
the Florin Road Partnership and American Heart Association.
Prior to serving on the City Council, Bonnie spent 22 years
of her professional career as an employee for Unilab Medical
Laboratories and Pacific Bell in Sacramento.

In addition to serving as the Mayor and Vice Mayor of
Citrus Heights, James is President and CEO of the Greater
Sacramento Urban League, one of the regions largest and most
successful non-profit organizations. A Veteran of the Vietnam
War, James Shelby has a strong commitment to the service of
others. His community service has been acknowledged by the
Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club, United Way,
and he is the recipient of the Distinguished Outstanding Alumni
Award from California State University Sacramento.

currently married and has two sons. Glover participates in

organizations.

elected in 2000. She represents residents of Land Park, Curtis
Park, Meadowview, Greenhaven and the Pocket areas of Sacramento

Jason Sample
President, Grant
Joint Union School District
Jason was elected to the GJUHSD Board of Trustees in 2000.
He currently serves as clerk of the Governing Board and is
attending Board Governance workshops offered by the California
School Boards Association. Sample is also Program Director
for Western Placer Unified School District. He attended American
River College and California State University, Sacramento.
He keeps active with the youth of the community and the students
of Grant Joint Union High School District.

Frederick A. Gayle Jr.
Trustee, Rio Linda Union School District
Frederick Gayle of North Highlands previously served on the
Rio Linda Union School District board from 1988-92. He also
served as a trustee in the Grant Joint Union High School District
from 1992 to 1994. Gayle, 71, was born in Alabama and received
a bachelor's degree in social studies and mathematics from
Alabama State University. He worked at Brookley Air
Force Base in Mobile, Ala., before transferring in 1968 to
McClellan Air Force Base.

Grove Unified School District
Elected to the Board of Education in 2000, Chet Madison, Sr.
has been involved with the Elk Grove Unified School District
for many years as his children attended Charles Mack Elementary
School, James Rutter Middle School, and graduated from Valley
High School. He has participated on several district advisory
committees. He graduated from San Francisco State University
with a degree in business administration and went on to serve
in the U.S. Army as a crew chief in the first Aviation Brigade
and is a Vietnam veteran.
