City Hosts General Plan Meeting

In efforts of creating “the most livable city in America,” the city of Sacramento held its annual General Plan meeting recently.

Local entrepreneurs Elgin Bradley (right) and Tom Armstrong (left) were among those participating in the city’s annual General Plan meeting. The event was held at the Tsakopoulos Galleria of the Central Library in downtown Sacramento.

Held at the Tsakopoulos Galleria of the Central Library in downtown Sacramento, city officials, community leaders, local proprietors and members of the public united to share their thoughts on the issues and vision of Sacramento’s future, development of land use alternatives, policies and the General Plan.

The General Plan is the city’s long-term comprehensive policy guide for the physical, economic, and environmental growth and renewal of the city. The General Plan is strongly oriented toward physical development of land uses, a circulation network, and supporting facilities and services.

It is comprised of goals, policies, programs and actions, which are based on an assessment of current and future needs and available resources. The document is the principal tool for City use in evaluating public and private building projects and municipal service improvements. Coming to an agreement of projects and improvements with the General Plan is a major step toward their approval.

The last comprehensive update to the City’s General Plan was completed in 1988 covering the planning period through 2006 and has outdated information, assumptions, projections and policies.

Beginning May 16 at the George Sim Center and May 18 at Kennedy High School, the people living or working in Sacramento can participate in the first of three Town Hall Forums to address the General Plan.
