A few service organizations in Sacramento know how to reach
the heart of the community. The Sojourner Truth Multicultural
Arts Center in South Sacramento is definitely one of them.

Recently, the Arts Center held a free to the public book
fair called the “SoJo Read to Achieve Book Fair,”
which gave the Sacramento community the opportunity to choose
from more than 5,000 books to purchase for their summer recreational
enjoyment.
Arts Center Director Lisa Daniels said about 250 people attended
the community affair and the event was a great success. Daniels
was “impressed” with another aspect of the book
fair.
“I was impressed with the volunteer effort of the
community,” Daniels said. “We had volunteers as
young 10 years old.”
The books were available for all ages, starting at a low
price of 25 cents. The first 20 children who attended the
book fair received “Good Reader” passes, good
for one free “Kid’s Meal” at any Hometown
Buffet location in the United States.
WriteWay2Freedom sponsored the book fair in association
with Hometown Buffet. The Rainbow Bakery outlet out of Oak
Park also did its part by providing free hotdog buns, Daniels
said.
“Everybody wanted to help out,” Daniels said.
In addition, food, face painting, a raffle, a reading contest
with prizes, and a bounce house for the kids were features
of the book fair.
“We sold a lot of books,” Daniels said. “People
bought books for adults, reference books, and kids books.”
The Arts Center would like to stage another book fair possibly
at the end of the year.
