On a cool Friday morning around 11 a.m. over a week ago
myself and the entire staff of The Sacramento OBSERVER experienced
a red letter day in our lives. What is a red letter day you
ask?
A red letter day is when you experience an event or experience
that is forever etched in your mind and soul. In other words
you will never forget the experience.
What happened? Don King one of the most recognizable persons
in America entered the premises of The OBSERVER with his entourage
right on schedule. King with his trademark hairstyle is the
most successful boxing promoters in history.
It would take three pages to list all of his accomplishments
from promoting Muhammad Ali to Mike Tyson to Michael Jackson
to Evander Holyfield and many other boxers who owe their success
to his salesmanship skills.
King then ventured into The OBSERVER conference room and
proceeded to dominate the room with his eloquent use of the
English language. When King ventured into the grounds of The
Observer, we knew that we were in for a special moment. The
way he greeted the Publisher Dr. William H. Lee and the especially
the female staffers made everyone feel special. When King
entered the conference room, Roy Jones Jr., the former Light-heavyweight
and heavy-weight champion was already seated at the conference
table.
A few minutes later, Felix “Tito” Trinidad,
the former welter-weight and middleweight champion of the
world entered the room with his entourage. King was in Sacramento
to promote the first of his joint boxing cards with Galvin
Maloof of Maloof Sports and Entertainment. The real reason
for Jones and Trinidad were in town was the fact that King
has coaxed these two champions to a fight in January 2008
that will really wake-up the interest in boxing. In between
King’s usual rant about his background, the love of
America, his lunch with President Bush that week, his meeting
with the governor, his quoting bible scriptures and his goading
of the two champions; he took some questions from Dr. Lee,
Antonio Harvey (The OBSERVER reporter who brokered this meeting),
and myself.
King was especially proud of providing 2,000 FREE tickets
to the youth of Sacramento to come out to ARCO for a boxing
clinic on Saturday morning. Even though King has made millions
of dollars from his successful promoting efforts, he has given
millions of dollars to charity causes with his Don King Foundation.
Because of other time commitments, King and his two champions
had to leave not without everyone wanting to take pictures
with these Giants of the Boxing world. One of the staffers
remarked to me that they enjoyed every second of King and
the two champions visit to The OBSERVER.
A day that no one will ever forget.
